Can a teacher legally deny a student permission to use the bathroom during class? What factors determine whether denying a bathroom break is acceptable or could be considered abusive, and how do emergency situations or medical needs impact a teacher’s decision?

This is a tricky question. First off, students must have access to bathrooms in general. Second, if there is a medical need, students cannot be denied bathroom use. For everything else, there are the minutiae details. Teachers can say no to a student going during a class, which happens many times due to misbehavior or if the student has repeated bad behavior habits. However, if the teacher is the one in charge of that student all day and is continuously not allowing bathroom breaks, that could be considered abuse. There could also easily be an emergency – a student might feel ill, need to use the restroom because of their period, or might be on the verge of an accident. Is the student able to bring themselves to the bathroom as well, such as high schoolers? Or are they younger, have less bladder control, and need more supervision? Would bringing the student to the bathroom leave 30 others unattended? Are there teacher’s assistants or hall monitors to help with this type of situation? There are many factors to consider, and teachers must take care to make sure there are no abusive situations occurring. Many times, denying the student the bathroom break isn’t worth any possible effects of the denial.
