Mississippi does not have a time limit on how long a person can be held in jail without being formally indicted by a grand jury. This is because of the infrequency of grand jury meetings in some counties. However, Mississippi does have a 270-day speedy trial rule for criminal cases. This means that, unless good cause is shown, all offenses for which indictments are presented to the court must be tried within 270 days after the accused has been arraigned. Appellate courts also have a 270-day window from the final briefing. Mississippi also has statutes of limitation on the window before prosecution of a crime. For crimes not specifically listed in the statute, the statute of limitations is two years after the crime. It is also important to note that once at trial, it can take weeks, months, or even years for the trial to resolve depending on how complex it is. While there are deadlines within the trials, such as for responses, there is no law dictating how quickly a trial must be wrapped up.
