About Hamilton County, Tennessee

During the Civil War, Hamilton County was home to an important saltpeter mining operation. This is the main ingredient in gunpowder. It was obtained by leaching the earth from caves. Lookout Mountain Cave was an important source of saltpeter in the Civil War. Robert Cravens owned the land surrounding the mine. Cravens signed a contract with the Tennessee Military and Financial Board in May 1861 to deliver 20,000 lbs of saltpeter. He reported on May 24 that he had 10 hoppers in his cave. Cravens also mined Nickajack Cave in Marion County. He quit mining at Lookout Mountain Cave in 1862 and rented the cave out to the Confederate Nitre and Mining Bureau. They mined the cave between June 1862 and July 1863. Chattanooga's Federal forces occupied Chattanooga in 1863. This ended the mining. They remained until the end of the war.
