Cary is located in the eastern United States in the piedmont region. Most of Cary can be found in western Wake County. There are also small sections of Chatham County that are neighborhood-sized. Cary covers 58.7 miles in total according to the 2020 U.S. Census. Cary is bordered to the east and north by Raleigh, in general toward the north by Research Triangle Park, Morrisville, and Holly Springs, to the south by Apex, Holly Springs, and west by the Jordan Lake region.
Cary sits at the border between the Durham Basin, which has softer sedimentary rock, and the piedmont, which has harder metamorphic rocks. Both geologic provinces contain igneous rock intrusions. The landscape has generally gentle to moderately sloping hills, separated by narrow V-shaped Valleys. There are, however, areas with steeper slopes, broader U-shaped valleys, and more open spaces in west Cary. These are located along NC 55, north of Green Hope School Road, and near Research Triangle Park. Cary's average elevation stands at 495 feet.
