Avery County, located in the High Country of North Carolina, is the state's youngest county, established in 1911 from parts of neighboring counties. It is renowned for its high elevations, including the highest county seat in Eastern America—Newland, situated at over 3,500 feet above sea level. This elevation contributes to Avery County's cool summer climate and reliable snowfall in winter, making it a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding, with several major ski resorts like Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain within its borders. The county's rugged landscapes are also home to the scenic Linville Gorge, sometimes referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the East," and the beautiful Linville Falls.
Avery County is steeped in cultural heritage, particularly noted for its contributions to the craft and Christmas tree industries. The area is one of the leading producers of Fraser fir trees, known widely as some of the best Christmas trees in the nation. This agricultural specialty is celebrated annually at the county's Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk, where the highlight is a quirky race of woolly worms—caterpillars believed to predict the severity of the coming winter. This unique festival attracts thousands of visitors each year and includes crafts, food vendors, live music, and other family-friendly activities that showcase local culture and community spirit.
Notable individuals from Avery County include Dr. Mary Martin Sloop, who with her husband founded the Crossnore School in 1913, a center for educating the children of the mountain region and promoting crafts and skills that could provide them with economic opportunities. Avery County also hosts several events that draw attention to its natural beauty and recreational opportunities, including the annual Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain, which celebrate Scottish heritage with traditional games, dancing, and music, attracting visitors from all over the country to experience a slice of Scottish culture in the picturesque setting of the Appalachian Mountains.
