About Forest Hills, New York

Forest Hills, nestled in the central portion of Queens, New York, is a neighborhood renowned for its verdant settings and stately homes. It is distinctly divided into two main sections: Forest Hills Gardens, one of the United States' oldest planned communities, designed in the early 20th century with the influence of the English garden city movement, featuring winding streets and Tudor-style homes; and the more urbanized area outside the Gardens, characterized by apartment buildings and bustling commercial streets like Austin Street with its array of shops and eateries. The neighborhood's blend of suburban tranquility with urban convenience makes it a sought-after locale within Queens.

Forest Hills has been home to a multitude of notable figures across diverse fields. It was once the residence of the iconic folk musician Simon Garfunkel, who, along with Paul Simon, formed the famous musical duo Simon & Garfunkel. The neighborhood also served as a home for the legendary band, the Ramones, several of whose members grew up there, contributing to its rich musical heritage. Additionally, famed professional tennis player Helen Jacobs, who won nine Grand Slam titles, resided in Forest Hills, a nod to the neighborhood's significant sports culture.

Historically, Forest Hills has been the site of important cultural and sporting events that have shaped its identity. The West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills hosted the U.S. Open tennis tournament from 1915 to 1977 before it moved to Flushing Meadows. The tournament helped put Forest Hills on the map as a premier sporting venue. Furthermore, the neighborhood has hosted legendary concerts, including those by The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, at the Forest Hills Stadium, which has seen a revival in recent years as a popular concert venue. These events highlight the unique cultural and historical landscape of Forest Hills, making it a prominent and cherished part of New York City’s heritage.
