Downtown Jersey City is the area between the Hudson River and the Newark Bay Extension and the New Jersey Palisades. It is also bounded to the north by Hoboken and to the south by Liberty State Park.
The Historic Downtown area is a mostly low-rise neighborhood on the west side of the waterfront. It is popular due to its close proximity to Manhattan and other amenities. It also includes Hamilton Park and Van Vorst Park, both square parks that are surrounded by brownstones. This historic downtown also contains Paulus Hook, Harsimus Cove, and the Village neighborhoods. Newark Avenue and Grove Street are the main streets in Downtown Jersey City. Both have seen significant development, and many shops and restaurants can be found in the nearby neighborhoods. The Grove Street Station is currently being renovated. A number of new residential buildings surround the stop, including the proposed 50-story building at 90 Columbus. Historic Downtown houses many cultural attractions, including the Jersey City Museum, Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse, and the Harsimus Stem Embankment on Sixth Street. This is a citizen's movement that aims to transform the Embankment into a public parkland, modeled after Manhattan's High Line.
