About Wyandotte County, Kansas

Wyandott, Wyandotte, or Wyandotte Indians are the names of the county. The French called them the Huron, but they were actually called Wendat. They were closely related to the Iroquois with whom they occasionally fought. They hoped to keep the white Americans from their territory and make the Ohio River the border of the United States with Canada.

One branch of Wyandot emigrated to the Ohio area. They generally followed the path of assimilation in Anglo-American society. Many converted to Christianity after being influenced by missionaries. They were moved to Wyandotte County, where they established a community with Anglo settlers in 1843. This area was also influenced by Christian Munsee.

They re-created the Ohio Constitution in Kansas, which was set up by Wyandot. They established the territorial government in Kansas and Nebraska and elected their own territorial governor.
