The Great Plains of North America were inhabited by nomadic Native Americans for many millennia. The Kingdom of France held large areas of North America from the 16th century until the 18th century. After the French and Indian War ended in 1762, France secretly gave New France to Spain under the Treaty of Fontainebleau. Spain gave most of the land back to France in 1802.
The majority of Kansas' land was purchased by the United States in 1803, from France, as part of the Louisiana Purchase covering 828,000 acres. This purchase cost 2.83 cents an acre. After the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed with Spain. This agreement brought all or part of the land needed for ten states into the United States, including Southwest Kansas. The Kansas Territory was established in 1854 and Kansas was made the 34th state of the United States.
