Le Mars is an idyllic town situated on the Floyd River in Plymouth County of Iowa's northwest. Famous for its charming parks, historic downtown district, and delicious ice cream. Le Mars can be found roughly 25 miles northeast of Sioux City as the region's biggest city; surrounding it are several other small communities such as Merrill and Remsen.
Wells Enterprises, best known for producing Blue Bunny brand of ice cream since 1913 and founded here by Fred H. Wells is one of the oldest and largest global manufacturers, selling products across over 40 countries worldwide. Another feature in Le Mars that draws visitors' attention is their Ice Cream Capital of the World Plaza which commemorates this fact with an array of sculptures and exhibits honoring Le Mars as "Ice Cream Capital of the World."
Le Mars has also been home to some illustrious figures throughout its history, such as John S. Pillsbury - born here in 1827 - an accomplished businessman and politician who went on to play an influential role in early Minnesota history as governor during the Civil War before serving in Congress as senator later on. Another well-known resident was William Frawley (known for playing Fred Mertz on I Love Lucy TV series); Frawley was actually born nearby Burlington but lived briefly during his childhood years in Le Mars before moving onto other places nearby for longer.
Le Mars' historical events played an essential part in settling America West during the mid 19th century. Sitting on the western edge of Iowa frontier at that time, many settlers passed through Le Mars before heading west in search of California Gold Rush jobs or elsewhere in America's wide open spaces. Nowadays Le Mars remains an active community which celebrates both history and culture through events like Plymouth County Fair or Ice Cream Days festival.
