Emmetsburg played host to several conflicts between settlers and Native Americans during the mid-19th century due to its location on Iowa's western frontier at that time. One notable event is the Spirit Lake Massacre of 1857 where several settlers were murdered by Native American groups seeking revenge against mistreatment of their tribe by European settlers. This tragedy had lasting ramifications on both cities and counties alike due to increased tensions between groups as a whole, eventually leading to tribes being uprooted from ancestral lands by increasing tension.
