About Louisa County, Iowa

Louisa County is a county located in southeastern Iowa, bordered by the Mississippi River on the east. It covers an area of 418 square miles, and its county seat is Wapello. The county is part of the Iowa City Metropolitan Statistical Area, and it is located approximately 30 miles south of Iowa City. Louisa County is home to several historic sites and attractions, including the Cairo Woods Wildlife Area and the Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge, which offer opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and other outdoor activities.

One interesting fact about Louisa County is that it was the site of the only Civil War battle fought in Iowa. The Battle of Athens took place on August 5, 1861, when Confederate troops under the command of General Jeff Thompson attacked Union forces stationed in the town of Athens. The Union troops, led by Colonel James A. Bates, were able to repel the Confederate attack and maintain control of the town. Today, a historical marker commemorates the site of the battle.

Several famous people have lived in Louisa County over the years, including William S. Clark, who was the first president of the University of California and served as the Iowa State Agricultural College's first professor of chemistry. Another notable resident was Samuel Freeman Miller, who served as a justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1862 to 1890. Additionally, James Wilson, who served as the United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1897 to 1913, was born in the county.
