Surrounded by rolling hills, natural lakes, and dense forests - making Knox an ideal playground for outdoor adventurers - it makes for a picturesque destination.
Knox was once known as "Glass Capital of Indiana." Over several decades in the late 1800s and early 1900s, several factories produced glass products like bottles, jars, and windows for customers around the world - leading to jobs and economic development in Knox. Although some small glass factories remain today, their presence is not quite what it once was.
Over the years, Knox has been home to some illustrious figures. George Ade, a renowned author and playwright born there in 1866, is best remembered for his humorous stories and satirical essays that were popular during the early 1900s. Another famous person from Knox was Roger B. Chaffee - an astronaut tragically lost in 1967 during Apollo 1 fire; born and raised here, Chaffee went on to become an accomplished naval aviator and astronaut.
Knox has seen many significant events over the years. In 1913, a tornado devastated downtown Knox, killing several people and destroying many buildings - including the courthouse - leading to extensive rebuilding efforts that shaped the city into what it is today. More recently in 2020, hundreds of people attended an enormous protest against police brutality and racial inequality that drew hundreds of people - one of many similar protests held nationwide after George Floyd's passing.
