About Danville, Indiana

Danville is a town located in Indiana's central part, just west of Indianapolis. It's known for its quaint downtown area with many locally-owned businesses and restaurants. Furthermore, there are several parks and recreational areas such as Ellis Park and Wabash-Erie Canal Park nearby.

Danville was home to the first school in Indiana to provide classes for students with disabilities, the Indiana School for the Deaf and Dumb (later known as ISD). Established in 1843, this institution provided education and training to those with hearing and speech impairments and was instrumental in shaping special education programs across Indiana and beyond.

Danville has had its share of famous residents over the years. Ovid Butler, founder of Butler University in Indianapolis and influential figure in both education and law circles in Indiana, resided here during the mid-1800s. John B. Stetson - creator of Stetson hat company fame - briefly resided here during late 1800s and earned notoriety for his contributions to American West development.

One of the most dramatic events to occur in Danville was the 1895 lynching of three African-American men. They had been accused of raping a white woman and were arrested and held at the local jail when a mob of white residents broke into it and pulled the men from their cells before hanging them from a tree in town square. This event remains an enduring chapter in American history and serves as a stark reminder of racial violence's legacy here.
