The Kansas-Nebraska Act, dated May 30, 1854, created the Territory of Nebraska, and the Territory of Kansas. They were divided by the Parallel 40deg Nord. The future Adams County, Colorado occupied the northern Arapahoe County in Kansas Territory, just south of Nebraska Territory.
John D. "Colonel Jack", Henderson, a Kansas Territory trader, and ranch builder, built a trading post and hotel on Henderson Island, South Platte River, Arapahoe County in 1859. Jack Henderson, the former editor, and owner of the Leavenworth Journal, was a pro-slavery politician and had been accused in eastern Kansas of voter fraud. Henderson sold meat and provisions for gold seekers as they made their way up the South Platte River Trail to reach the gold fields during Pike's Peak Gold Rush. Henderson Island was the first permanent settlement of the South Platte River Valley, located between Fort Saint Vrain (Nebraska Territory) and the Cherry Creek Diggings (Kansas Territory). Jack Henderson later returned to eastern Kansas, where he fought for the Union during the American Civil War. Today, Henderson Island is the location of the Adams County Regional Park & Fairgrounds.
On January 29, 1861, the Kansas Territory's eastern part was admitted to the Union and designated the State of Kansas. The remaining western portion of Kansas Territory was added to the Union on February 28, 1861. [4] On November 1, 1861, the Colorado Territory created Arapahoe County. Colorado was then admitted to Union on August 1, 1876.
The Colorado General Assembly decided in 1901 to divide Arapahoe County into 3 parts: a new Adams County; a new consolidated City and County of Denver; and the rest of Arapahoe County which would be renamed South Arapahoe County. The creation of Adams County was delayed by a ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court and subsequent legislation. A referendum was also required. Governor James Bradley Orman named Brighton the temporary Adams County Seat. Adams County was originally 160 miles long, running from Sheridan Boulevard in present-day Kansas to the Kansas border. The eastern 88 miles of Adams County were transferred to Washington County and Yuma County on May 12, 1903. This reduced the county's length to 72 miles. Adams County voters elected Brighton to be the permanent county seat on November 8, 1904.
In 1989, 53 square miles of Adams County were transferred to the City and County of Denver. This was in preparation for Denver International Airport. The densely populated western part of the county is now split into two peninsulas. Adams County lost its northwest corner when the consolidated City and County in Broomfield were created on November 15, 2001.
