In 1851, California was made a state. Yolo County was created. "Uncle Johnny", also known as Johnny, settled in Woodland at the corner of First Street and Clover Streets. Henry Wyckoff arrived in 1851 and established a store that he called "Yolo City" two years later. If Frank S. Freeman hadn't bought 160 acres of land in 1857, the new Yolo City would have remained a single store. Freeman started to build a town that would become a center of trade for America's richest agricultural areas. Freeman gave the land to anyone who wanted to clear it and build homes. Freeman suggested in 1859 that the town be named Woodland. The post office agreed. The Woodland Post Office was opened on July 5, 1861, and Freeman was appointed Postmaster. Freeman was quick to develop the town by leasing and selling commercial buildings.
