Sonora was established by Mexican miners in the California Gold Rush. It was named after Sonora, Mexico by Mexican miners during the California Gold Rush. The majority of the gold that could be extracted using traditional mining techniques was quickly removed, so miners had to resort to more complicated and costly mining techniques in order to find deep pockets of gold and quartz. Sonora, as well as other mining towns in the era, experienced economic hardship as the gold price dropped. Sonora's population and size decreased steadily over the years as "gold fever" subsided. The Hebrew Benevolent Society created the Sonora Hebrew Cemetery in 1851. It is a large cemetery that contains the remains of European-born Jews who immigrated to Gold Country.
