Solano County was the first county in California. It was established in 1850, at the time California became a state.
General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo requested that the county be named after Chief Solano, a Native American tribe from the region and Vallejo’s close ally. At one point, Chief Solano led the tribes that ran between the Petaluma River & the Sacramento River. Sem-Yeto was another name for the chief, which means "brave or strong hand". The Spanish name Francisco Solano was given to the Chief during his baptism at the Catholic Mission. It is named after Father Francisco Solano, a Spanish Franciscan missionary. The common surname "Solano", especially in the north of Spain is Navarra, Zaragoza, and La Rioja.
