The Ohlone were the first known inhabitants of the area that would become Redwood City. They were there when the Spanish claimed it and established missions.
Redwood City was the first San Mateo County city to incorporate in 1867. It has been the county seat ever since 1856. This land was part of Rancho de las Pulgas, which the Mexican government granted to the Arguello family back in 1835. After the Mexican-American War, California was annexed to the United States, and its control was challenged. Simon M. Mezes was the family lawyer and was able to defend the claim in 1854. He was then allowed to purchase the portion of the estate now known as Redwood City. Mezes sold some land to people who were already living on the banks of Redwood Creek. He named the settlement "Mezesville." Mezes Park is still in existence on the land Mezes gave for open space, even though it was not retained by the city.
Eikichi and Sadakusi, Japanese immigrants brothers, planted what may have been the first commercially-grown chrysanthemums grown in the United States. This was in Redwood City in 1907. The city was declared the "Chrysanthemum Center of the World" by the chamber of commerce in 1926. However, the internment of Japanese Americans in 1942 and other factors would result in flower farming becoming a minor industry in the area.
