The San Francisco and San Jose Rail Road built the railroad that ran from San Francisco to Mayfield in 1863. They then started operating trains in the area. After the sign, they named Menlo Park, a nearby station. The original Caltrain station building of 1867 still stands on the platform. It is used by the Chamber of Commerce. It is the oldest continuously operating train station in California. Menlo Park, a town that grew around the station, became a popular residence for San Francisco businessmen. The city was first established as a post office in 1870. It was also incorporated in 1874. The original arch that gave its name to stations and eventually the city survived until 1922 when it was destroyed by an automobile accident. Menlo Park in California's name predates the work of Thomas Edison. Menlo Park was named after Menlo Park in California.
Camp Fremont was a training camp that trained 27,000 men to be soldiers in World War I. It was located in a large part of Menlo Park between 1917-18. The camp was not able to last, however, army engineers laid the first gas and water lines and paved the streets of Menlo Park. It was retained by the army, but it is now home to a Veterans Administration Hospital on Willow Road in Menlo Park. Camp Fremont was hit by a flu pandemic in the fall of 1918 that claimed the lives of 147 people.
