Historical legends claim that the San Luis Rey Mission was robbed by a small group of Native Americans in the late 18th century. The Native Americans fled the Spanish troops and fled to the hills. The Spaniards pursuing Native Americans found a fertile valley in 1797. They named it Los Vallecitos de San Marcos to commemorate the date of discovery, April 25, St. Mark's Day. On April 22, 1840, Governor Juan B. Alvarado granted Rancho Vallecitos de San Marcos to his relative, Jose Maria Alvarado. Jose Alvarado died in the Pauma Massacre of 1846. His wife was then granted the land. She sold it to Lorenzo Soto. Soto sold a portion of his land to Cave Couts in the late 1850s. His family soon began raising livestock. Cave Couts were the original owners of the land. Major Gustavus French Merriam, Topeka, Kansas made the first permanent settlement. Merriam purchased 160 acres in the Twin Oaks Valley, where he began honey and wine production.
