La Mesa was established in 1869. The City of La Mesa became a city on February 16, 1912. It doesn't have a charter, but it operates according to the laws of California.
2020 saw civil unrest in La Mesa following the murder of George Floyd, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. An unarmed black man, who was unarmed, was grabbed by a La Mesa Police officer. He was then taken to the Grossmont Trolley Station. The incident was captured on video and went viral, resulting in more than 1000 protesters gathering at the Grossmont Trolley Station. A police officer shot an African-American grandmother in the face with bean bags. In connection with the incident at the trolley station, the officer was charged with falsifying the police report. However, he was acquitted in December 2021.
