La Jolla was established as an art colony by Anna Held in 1894. This was a group of twelve cottages that Irving Gill designed. He had only moved to San Diego a year before and became San Diego's most well-known architect.
Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire, Mel Ferrer, and Mel Ferrer founded the La Jolla Playhouse in 1947. Inactive since 1959, it was revived on the University of California campus in 1983 under Des McAnuff. It now includes three theaters, the Mandell Weiss Theater, the Mandell Weiss Forum, and the Potiker Theater.
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego was established in 1941 in La Jolla in the former residence of Ellen Browning Scripps. The museum has been through several renovations and expansions. Plans are underway to triple its size.
Nikolai Sokoloff (former Cleveland Orchestra conductor) founded the La Jolla Music Society in 1941. The society presented the premieres of commission works in the auditorium of La Jolla high school before moving on to present their concerts at the Sherwood Auditorium of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center has been the permanent home of the La Jolla Music Society since April 2019. It hosts world-class performances by LJMS and other San Diego artists. Conrad will also host a variety of conferences, corporate meetings, and private events.
