The San Antonio Hospital was Upland's original hospital. It opened at the corner of Arrow Highway, San Antonio Avenue, and San Antonio Avenue, just one year after Upland became a city. It had 18 beds and a staff of five doctors. The community stock sale funds helped fund the construction of the hospital. On Wednesday, July 30, 1924, the expanded San Antonio Community Hospital opened its doors. According to the Upland News, this new hospital was "commodiously constructed" and had a capacity of 50 patients. This new facility was located on East San Bernardino Road and cost $173,107.10.
The citizens of Upland established a volunteer fire company with F.H. in 1911. Manker is named the Fire Chief. The first piece of apparatus that was recorded was a hose cart, which was pulled by the first personnel available. The first major fire in the new community was set on the east side, at Ninth Street and Second Avenue. The fire at Second Avenue south of Ninth Street sparked interest in protecting the community. In 1915, the D Street fire station was constructed. This was also the year that the first motorized fire engine was bought. The Upland Fire Department was disbanded in 2017 and became part of the San Bernardino County Fire District.
Upland was one of the cities that were located along the National Old Trails Road. This road was established in 1912 and is the first national coast-to-coast highway. The national highway in Upland ran along Foothill Boulevard. This was the same route as the Spanish explorers. The famed Route 66 was established in 1926 by the Western part of the National Old Trails Road. It was built 100 years after Jedediah Smith made his expedition.
