Hawthorne, which was originally called the "Hawthorne Improvement Company" in 1905 by B.L. Harding and H.D. Lombard. Harding's daughter, Lombard, shared her birthday -- the 4th of July, American Independence Day -- with Nathaniel Hawthorne (New England author). It was decided to name the city after Hawthorne.
Hawthorne used to be a settlement for whites only. It was also known as a sundown community. In the 1930s, signs warning African-Americans not to go to Hawthorne after sundown warned them.
