About Calabasas, California

Calabasas comes from the Spanish calabaza which means "pumpkin", squash, or "gourd". Some historians believe that Calabasas may be derived from the Chumash word Calahoosa which means "where the wild geese fly". Residents are more open to the idea of squash because there are a lot of wild squash plants. The Calabasas Grade is located east of Las Virgenes Road. Legend has it that a Basque rancher from Oxnard dumped a wagonload full of pumpkins onto the road in 1824 to get to Los Angeles. A multitude of pumpkins grew along the road in the following spring. Las Calabasas was the name of the area, which is where the pumpkins fell. Jose Longinos Martinez, a Spanish botanist, named the area "Las Calabazas" in 1792, which is before the legend.

The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce and the City of Calabasas hold an October Pumpkin Festival. This festival features live entertainment, carnival games, demonstrations, and exhibits. From a small-town festival to an annual event, the festival has grown from being a major annual event. Although the Pumpkin Festival takes place in Juan Bautista de Anza Park, Calabasas, it is believed that the original festival was held on the same site as the first pumpkin patch.
