Alhambra is also known as the Gateway of the San Gabriel Valley. Its origins are credited to Benjamin Davis Wilson, who stopped at the San Gabriel Mission while on his way to China in the 1840s. He was so fascinated by the area's history and geography that he decided to remain.
He and J. De Barth Shorb divided a portion of the Wilson-owned acreage into a new community.
This area was bound to the east by the current boundary of San Gabriel. To the west, the Arroyo de San Pasqual, Alhambra Road, and Union Pacific Railroad were to be found to the south.
