McKinleyville is made up of several smaller settlements. The area was named Dows Prairie after Joe Dows, who settled there in the 1860s. A small community was located just south of the area, called Minor. Minor was settled for the first time in the late 19th century. Calville was located just south of Minor. Calville was settled in 1851 by employees of California Barrel Company. In honor of President William McKinley, Minor was renamed McKinleyville. McKinleyville is considered to include all three of these areas.
McKinleyville's first post office opened in 1903. It was closed in 1921 and reopened in 1955.
