It was once difficult to cross the Arkansas River on Highway 60 toward Conway. First, Perry County residents used private ferry services. Then, they were provided by the Conway Chamber of Commerce in the 1920s. Later, the Arkansas Department of Transportation was responsible until 1944 when the service was stopped due to a lack of traffic. Nearby residents asked Senator Guy "Mutt" Jones from Faulkner County, and Representative Paul Van Dalsem from Perry County to convince the state legislature that $20,000 was needed to reopen the ferry service. It operated until 1970 when a bridge was constructed on Highway 60. This eliminated the need to use the Toad Suck Ferry.
Since the days of cotton as a cash crop, Perry County has been dominated by agriculture and timber. Sod farms have thrived along the Fourche La Fave since the 1970s. The economic boom is also supported by the growth of pine trees. Numerous cattle ranches are scattered throughout the county. The poultry industry is also important.
Harris Brake Lake is 1,300 acres and was created in 1955 to provide wildlife management and recreational opportunities for hunters, fishermen, and tourists.
