It destroyed everything within its path, from approximately five miles southwest to Brinkley, to about ten miles north of it. Thirty-five people were killed and more than 200 were injured. Nearly all buildings in the city were destroyed or damaged. The Flood of 1927, which occurred along the White River and quickly covered most of the lower county settlements, was second. The Clarendon levee system that protected Clarendon collapsed on April 20th. Soon, Clarendon was submerged in twenty feet of water.
Monroe County residents joined other Americans in helping to fund the war effort during World War I by purchasing war bonds, planting victory gardens, and raising money for Red Cross. Clarendon citizens raised $237.89 in 1917 to pay for a silver service on the battleship Arkansas. In early December 1917, Navy recruitment parties were held at Clarendon and Brinkley to raise 1,000 men as quickly as possible.
