The Great Depression began on October 24, 1929, with the New York Stock Market crash. Farmers lost their farms, wages fell, and unemployment rose. Income had fallen to one-third of its level before October 1929 by 1932. Many farmers had to sell their land during the 1930s. Agriculture was the main source of income for the county for many years. The most important crop was cotton, and many early communities had cotton-growing facilities. The second largest crop was corn, but the timber industry soon became the most important industry in the county. Many of the settlements in Little River County were near sawmills, cotton plants, and rivers.
