More about Lincoln County, Arkansas

In the early 1900s, Gould was also known as Joslyn Post Office or Palmers Switch. It was primarily a swamp. The railroad led to the rapid growth of the region. George H. Joslyn Sr. was the postmaster at the first post office in the area, established in 1904. His son succeeded him. Joslyn led a petition to incorporate the new town. It was presented to Lincoln County Court on Aug 6, 1907, and was given the name Gould after Jay Gould, a capitalist. Later, the Gould Southwestern Railroad connected Gould with Star City. It opened on January 6, 1909, and was in operation for fifty years.

Floodwaters from the Mississippi River surged into the Bayou Bartholomew and Arkansas Rivers, flooding much of the country. Although there were no Red Cross camps in Lincoln County, there were many in nearby Drew, Desha, and Jefferson counties. The county's cotton crop was destroyed by the Drought of 1930-1931. Cornerville, like many small communities, was unable to overcome these hits and saw its population drop rapidly. 1936: The Farm Security Administration purchased the plantation of Elmer Pierpont Ladd. It was part of a resettlement program that helped farmers who had been displaced. They divided the land into 60-acre lots and operated it as a cooperative.
