The Arkansas River was believed to have risen to nearly 43 feet in late May and early June 2019. This is 21 feet higher than the flood stage. The river reached 41 feet and damaged or destroyed low-lying areas. Except for one spot on highway 59 south that was reinforced after the flood of 1943-45, all levies were held in place. This flood saved many farmlands in the low-lying region. If the levies hadn't been rebuilt after the 1940s flood, this flood would have decimated a lot more land, homes, and businesses.
