Indian peoples first lived in the Jonesboro area for thousands of years. The Osage, Caddo, and Quapaw were the three historical tribes that inhabited the area at the time of European contact. Arkansas' name derives its name from the Quapaw language. These groups were known to have had close relations with Spanish and French traders and trappers.
The United States purchased this land in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, and American settlers arrived in the area where Jonesboro is. They started exploring, hunting, trapping, and trading with local Indian tribes. Soon after 1859, Jonesboro became a permanent settlement. Craighead County was created.
In 1859, land from Poinsett and Greene counties was taken and used to create Craighead County. Jonesboro was chosen as the first county seat. Lake City was chosen as the second county seat because of the increasing population in the west. In 1859, Jonesboro was home to 150 people. In recognition of his support of Craighead County's formation, it was named after William A. Jones. The original name of the city was Jonesborough. Later, it was shortened to its current spelling.
