One mile east of the original settlement, Hecht City was named after brothers Levi and Solomon Hecht who owned a lumber mill along Black River. Hecht City relocated to Corning's present location in 1871 when the Cairo and Fulton Railroad surveyed land for the route. The construction of the railroad through the settlement was finished in 1872. The name of the settlement was changed to Corning on February 5, 1873, in honor of H. D. Corning who was an engineer for the railroad.
Corning saw a tremendous period of growth during the first half of the 20th century. It was home to many industrial manufacturing innovations in the 1960s and 70s.
On March 9, 1966, a large explosion occurred in Corning. The explosion occurred in a munitions train car. It caused only one minor injury to the small town. It was reported widely in the region.
Two Corning properties are on the National Register of Historic Places: Sheeks House & Oliver House.
