Arkansas County Quorum Court ruled that Arkansas Post, the county seat since 1813 was no longer located in central Arkansas after several Southeast Arkansas counties were created. To become the county seat, a new town with a central location was proposed. The name DeWitt was founded on February 19, 1853. It was submitted by DeWitt Clinton's admirer. This was one of many places named after Clinton during that period. The town was first platted in 1854 and has been home to a post office ever since 1856. In 1875, the city was made a corporation.
