U.S. Navy Officer Lt. Edward Fitzgerald Beale was assigned by the U.S. War Department the task of building a federal wagon route across the 35th parallel. His second orders were to examine the feasibility of using camels in the Southwestern desert as pack animals. Beale traveled through Kingman, Texas in 1857 to survey the road and then built the road in 1859. Beale's Wagon Road was later included in U.S. Route 66, and then Interstate 40. White Cliffs Canyon, Kingman still has remnants of the wagon road.
Kingman was established in Arizona Territory in 1882 before Arizona Territory became a state. Kingman is located in the Hualapai Valley, between the Cerbat-Hualapai mountain ranges. It was originally a railroad siding close to Beale Springs. Lewis Kingman, a civil engineer, was responsible for the construction of the railroad that ran from Winslow to Beale Spring. Native Americans who lived in the area have used this spring for hundreds of years.
From 1864 to 1867, the Mohave County seat was initially located in Mohave City. After Nevada became a state in 1865, the Arizona Territory's west side of the Colorado River was transferred from Arizona to Nevada. It then became part of Clark County, Nevada. The remainder of Pah-Ute County was made part of Mohave County. In 1867, the county seat was moved from Pah-Ute County to Hardyville. In 1873, the county seat was transferred to Cerbat, a mining community. Then it was moved to Mineral Park near Chloride. The county seat and all other instruments were moved to Kingman in 1887 after a while.
Kingman was home to an American Army Air Force airfield during World War II. Kingman Army Airfield was established at the start of the war to train aerial gunnery pilots. It was one of the largest USAAF bases, with 35,000 airmen and soldiers. Kingman and the airfield played an important role in this crucial period of American history. The Kingman Airfield was one the most important reclamation sites for military aircraft after the war.
Kingman saw growth after the war as many major employers moved to the area. Kingman was used in 1953 to hold those accused of polygamy during the Short Creek raid. This was one of the most significant arrests in American history. Ford Motor Company set up a Yucca Army Airfield proving ground in 1955. To house the professionals and skilled workers at the proving grounds, Kingman saw the development of several major neighborhoods. Kingman's population grew in 1971 due to the construction of the Mohave Generating Station, Nevada, and the Mineral Park mine, which is near Chloride. The Kingman Airport Industrial Park also has a General Cable plant, which provided steady employment.
