Prospectors discovered silver in the San Carlos Apache Reservation in 1875. They also found an unusual, globe-shaped nugget of silver. Within four years, the silver started to deteriorate, but copper deposits had been discovered. The Old Dominion Copper Company, located in Globe, was ranked among the top ten richest companies in the world during the 1900s. In 1931, the Old Dominion was closed and all mining operations were moved to Miami.
Globe's economy is still heavily dependent upon the service sector. As of 2008, the city was home to one of the few remaining copper smelters in America.
