Wilcox County is heavily influenced by the Democratic Party. Barry Goldwater, the only Republican to win the county since 1900, was the only Republican to do so in 1964. This was when very few of the county's black residents had voted for more than seven decades. The opposition of the white minority to Civil Rights meant Lyndon Johnson, a national Democrat, was prohibited from the ballot. Despite the 1965 Voting Rights Act, black registration was slow enough that George Wallace, a segregationist, comfortably won the county in 1968. However, Wilcox has been the Democratic presidential candidate in every election since. It was one among six Wallace counties that voted for George McGovern in the 1972 landslide victory of Richard Nixon, which saw him win 3,000+ counties.
