About Sylacauga, Alabama

Sylacauga, known as the "Marble City," is located in Talladega County and is famed for its high-quality marble deposits. The city’s history is closely tied to the marble industry, dating back to the early 19th century when Italian sculptor Giuseppe Moretti used Sylacauga marble for numerous public monuments. This marble is considered some of the finest in the world, and the city’s quarries continue to operate, supplying marble for artists and architects alike.

Beyond its natural resources, Sylacauga is home to the B.B. Comer Memorial Library and hosts annual festivals that celebrate its cultural heritage. One unique event in Sylacauga’s history was the 1954 meteorite fall, where a meteorite struck a local woman, Ann Hodges, making her the only known person in history to be hit by a space rock. This rare incident brought international attention to the small city.

Sylacauga is also the birthplace of country music star Jim Nabors, known for his role as Gomer Pyle on television. Nabors’ connection to Sylacauga remains a point of pride for the community. The combination of marble production, historical events, and cultural influence makes Sylacauga a distinctive city in Alabama.
