Sumter County was created on December 18, 1832. Sumter County was a part of the Choctaw Nation from 1797 to 1832. It consisted of four villages. French explorers from Mobile were the first to settle in Sumter County. They settled in Fort Tombecbee near Epes. The Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek was signed by the Choctaw Indians in 1830. This gave Sumter County to them.
