Columbiana was chosen as the county seat for Shelby County in 1826, over rivals Calera or Montevallo. Columbiana, originally called Columbiana, celebrated her selection as the county seat by drilling holes into a large pine tree and filling it with gunpowder. The sound was heard miles away as the tree was torn up. The courthouse was later moved to Columbiana's old school building in 1826.
On January 13, 1832, a law passed by the Alabama Legislature changed the name of Shelby County's county chair to Columbiana. Columbiana was established on December 5, 1837. Its corporate limits were a one-quarter mile from the public square.
The decision was made in 1854 to build a larger courthouse on the south end "Of Silk Stocking Road", which is now Main Street. The courthouse was subject to many changes and additions from 1854 to 1908. The Shelby Iron Company Railroad connected Columbiana to Shelby, a nearby town, via the Shelby Iron Company Railroad.
