Joe Spinner Johnson, a sharecropper, was organizing fellow sharecroppers to form a union in 1935. His landlord made him quit his job and handed him over to a gang composed of whites. He was tied up and beaten by them. They took him to Selma where they put him in jail. He was screaming and being beaten by other prisoners. His mutilated body was found near Greensboro a few days later.
