Morgan County is located in the middle of Alabama. Decatur is the county seat. The Alabama Territorial legislature created the county from land that was acquired from Cherokee Indians under the Treaty of Turkeytown on February 6, 1818. It was previously known as Cotaco County. It was renamed to honor American Revolutionary War General Daniel Morgan, Virginia, on June 14, 1821. Although it is considered a dry or prohibition county, alcohol sales are permitted in Priceville, Hartselle, and Decatur. Morgan County is included in the Decatur, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Huntsville-Decatur-Albertville, AL Combined Statistical Area. It is located in the North, Northwest, and North-Central regions.
