The community was established before 1818 and was known first as "Screamersville" because wild animals' cries could still be heard at night. It was named the "Town of Marengo" in 1819 and became the county seat. In 1823, the name was changed to "Hohenlinden" to honor the county’s first European settlers, French Bonapartist refugees from the Vine and Olive Colony. This name is a tribute to the battle at Hohenlinden in Bavaria in 1800 when the French defeated both Austrian and Bavaria's armies. Later, the spelling was changed to Linden.
