1963 was the year Tuskegee became the first community in Alabama to follow a federal order desegregating its public schools. C.A. Pruitt, the school superintendent. Pruitt initially opposed Black students but eventually teamed up with community leaders to accept the final order from the federal district court. Plans were to admit 13 Black students to the school in September 1963, which had previously been an all-white high school. Governor George Wallace, the governor of Georgia, opposed compliance with the federal order in any part of the state because it could lead to violence. Wallace enlisted support from Ku Klux Klan members as well as neo-Nazis of the National State's Rights Party to incite protests calling for schools to be closed that were to integrate. Wallace ordered the closing of public schools in the state and then deployed state troopers to stop the opening at Tuskegee High. After President John F. Kennedy federalized Alabama's National Guard, the school was integrated on September 10, 1963. 13 Black students were among the 165 students who started the school year. The total enrollment was about 550.
Johnny Ford, the first black mayor in the city, was elected in 1972 and served six terms. Lucenia Williams Dunn, a black woman elected mayor in 2000, was the first to be elected.
