Moulton, Alabama is a city located in Lawrence County. It is part of the Decatur Metropolitan Area as well as the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. It was incorporated in 1819 to compete with Courtland for the title of the county seat. However, it didn't first appear on U.S. census rolls until 1900. Since 1820, the city has been Lawrence County's county seat.
An inn was built at the location of present-day Moulton in order to provide shelter for migrants who traveled the early routes through the region. Alabama became a state in 1819. Soon after Alabama became a state, Courtland and Moulton were both incorporated and competed to be the county seat in Lawrence County. Governor Thomas Bibb gave the seat to Moulton because it was the most centrally situated of the two in the county. Named after Lieutenant Michael Moulton who died fighting under General Andrew Jackson in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814, the city was named.
