Houston County was created from parts of Dale and Geneva counties on February 9, 1903. It was named for George Smith Houston. The state's history was centered on the cotton plantations and pine timber industries. These industries, in particular, relied heavily on slaved African Americans to provide labor.
This history was a major reason why African Americans dominated the population up until the 20th century. Many emigrated to the midwest and northern cities to find better economic opportunities and escape Jim Crow discrimination. Because of constitutional amendments and other laws, they were effectively disenfranchised at the beginning of the 20th Century. Many poor whites were also disenfranchised.
