Greene County was created on December 13, 1819. Eutaw was named the county seat after it was relocated from Erie in 1838. Eutaw is centrally located.
Eutaw's designation as the seat government stimulated economic growth.
Greene County, which was founded on July 30, 1969, became the first South after reconstruction to have both its commission and its school board dominated primarily by Negroes. The November 1968 general election saw the Greene County Commission removed from the ballot. After the suit was filed by the National Democratic Party of Alabama, a special election was ordered. The new vote saw African-American candidates win four of the five Greene County Commission seats and two additional seats on Greene County's School Board. The Montgomery Advertiser noted the following day that the election "given blacks control over both major governing bodies, a first for Alabama." Later, the date of the vote was described as "a watershed in black political empowerment" in Alabama. It led to African-American candidates winning the right to govern the counties where white residents are the minority.
