Geneva County was created on December 26, 1868.
Geneva County is located in the southeast part of Alabama. Geneva is the county seat. Named after Geneva County, it was also named after Geneva County, New York, which was in turn named after Geneva. New York was named after Geneva by Walter H. Yonge who was a Swiss native and early resident of the town. In certain parts of Geneva County, it is dry. Wine and beer are available in Geneva, Samson, and Slocomb. However, it is not sold in Hartford.
Due to Hurricane Frederic's damage, the county was declared a disaster zone in September 1979.
A gunman identified as Michael McLendon opened fire at nine locations in Geneva County, from the town of Samson to the city, of Geneva. He killed ten people and injured six more. McLendon was found at his old job, Reliable Metal Products, on the northeastern end of Geneva. He then took his own life.
